Was just coming to post this. Original premise, smartly done, action packed. Highly entertaining.

Though there was a time or two I wanted to just scream at the screen, "JUST SHOOT THE BITCH!!!"

I saw Inception yesterday.

To be honest I was expecting something harder to follow and more "Wait, what dream are they in or is it even?" stuff. I didn't find it hard to understand at all. (except for some stuff that was plot-hole-ish and made for inconsistent dream rules, If they're in free fall in one dream, have no gravity at all in the other, why wasn't the final layer gravity less? but it didn't bother me until after, anyway)

It was a good movie, though, and recomendable. Certainly not your standard summer blockbuster fare.

(The premise is a bit less original than you might think, The Science of Sleep, Paprika, as far as I've seen involve dreaming, getting it mixed up in reality ect...Plots are very different though)

Maybe I'll make a post Comic Con thread later, but my brief impressions were:

-Sucker Punch has an amazing fantasy look. Directed by Zack Snyder (300 and Watchmen). I WILL see this one based on the visuals alone. I'll try to find a trailer.

-Paul has an amazing cast. Simon Peg and Nick Frost (the two main characters from Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) wrote and co star in it. Seth Rogan does the voice of the main character. Sigourney Weaver and a ton of other people are in it. A really great ensemble cast. It looks like it could be hilarious, and it is directed by the guy who directed Superbad. There are no trailers yet as far as I know, but the rough footage I saw looks really good.

-Cowboys and Aliens looks really really good. It Stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Also Sam Rockwell and some other people I am forgetting their names. Directed by the guy who directed the iron man movies (his name escapes me at the moment). The are going for the tone of a traditional western crossed with a 50s scary sci-fi flic. The footage they cut for Comic Con has me excited, and they totally nailed the tone. They were supposed to go 3D, but that would have meant shooting in digital. The director felt that wouldn't work for capturing the tone of a traditional western so it is going to be 2D (hooray!).

-I saw a scene from Captain America and Hugo Weaving seems to play a really good Red Skull. Personally I hate his voice and he usually sounds really monotonous to me (maybe because he just isn't good at doing an American accent). But he does really really well in a german accent (which sounds a lot closer to his native accent).

-I Imagine there is a Thor trailer out by now and I will try to dig it up. It looks a lot better than I was expecting it too.

-Holy crap, the new Resident Evil movie looks atrocious.

-I'm not sure if Let Me In will be good. Too much of the movie relies on child actors and despite them getting two top tier child actors (the kid from The Road, and the girl from Kick-Ass) the scene I saw of the two of them were mediocre to poor. Personally I'd recommend you skip it and just see the original Let the Right One In.

Unrelated:
Sunday morning at about 8AM, I was in line behind Nick Frost at a Starbucks. 10 minutes later Eric Estrada walked by me down the sidewalk. And later that day Malcolm McDowel bumped into me as he was roaming the main Comic Con exhibition hall. I saw tons of stars this weekend, but I had these 3 come close enough to invade my personal space.

No, I just thought we should have one on a day that I discoverd a bunch of movie updates that I wanted to share. The most notable at the time was that Samuel L Jackson was out the of the Marvel films. Obviously that situation worked itself out.

But speaking of which, at the Marvel Panel they had the full current cast. I think this was all known already but to refresh your memory:

Sam Jackson as Nick Fury
Robert Downey as Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Chris Evans as Captain America
Scarlet Johanson as the Black Widow
Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (Hulk) WTF.gif

(and Clark Gregg as a SHIELD agent, and he also seems to have a significant role in the Thor movie as well).

Trailer Fun, comic con edition:

The Goon trailer

Burried (starring Ryan Reynolds)
I hear really good things from people who have seen this one at film festivals. The Trailer is a little wierd because the entire movie takes place in a coffin.

Full length Tron trailer

RED trailer. Bruce Willis, Morgan Friedman, John Malcovich.

I'm dying to find you the Sucker Punch footage I saw at Comic Con. I'm still working on it.
Edit: Update: I read a shorter version of the trailer I saw at comic con will go online Tuesday.

Random Hillarious moment at Comic Con:

There was a really interesting and intense trailer that was being shown. It really got everyone on the edge of their seats. It was a film I had never heard of. 6 people get into an elevator and the elevator gets stuck. A girl in the elevator gets cut and we don't know how. The people in the elevator think someone in the elevator did it and is up to something.

Across the screen it reads "somone is not who they seem to be." The intensity goes up another notch. The camera feed from the elevator to the security room in the building are going in and out. A crew outside the door of the elevator can't seem to cut their way in. The camera shots evoke feelings of claustrophobia. Something supernatural is going on and it is intense.

The hall of 6,500 people watching this trailer are excited for this intense thriller. This shit is genuinely scary. Then, across the screen you read, "from the mind of M. Night Shamalan" and the entire crowd of of sixty-five hundred booo in chorus.

movie is called "Devil"

I think it's exactly what M-Night should be doing now. He has some interesting and good ideas it just seems that his execution is weaker than a mixed drink at a strip club. Handing off his ideas to other talent may be a good next step.

I also give 10 Pilgrim points to anyone who finds the Thor footage.

Sucker Punch trailer

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/suckerpunch/

I'm not a huge fan of the Snyder... I think it's because he translates comics... he doesn't interpret them. He uses them as a story board and does the frame by frame thing... which I don't mind in small doses but when it's 3/4 of the film it starts to get on my nerves. Don't mind the fan service but give me something more. This property if it is based on a comic is not one I've ever read so my normal problem goes away... and I like the stylistic feel that snyder puts in so I'm in.

It's enjoyable, but I wouldn't go out of your way to read it. It is 6 books at $11.95 a piece.
If it was a video game I suggest you rent rather than buy. tongue.gif

However it may hold a special place in your heart because most of the characters are Canadian (although not french canadian), and it takes place in Canada. It is sort of a coming of age/love story of a slacker in his early 20s (although he acts more like a teenager).

It goes over his relationship with a 17 year old, along with dealing with 2-3 other ex-girlfriends he had in the past. Plus the main relationship story with Ramona (who has the 7 evil exes). Being in a terrible band, his friendship with his gay roomate. Stuff like that.

So if you want want a lot of relationship stuff with some video game references go for it.

BTW, the last book was only published two weeks ago.

That actor is the Dude who played Kirk's Dad in Star Trek. He has kinda bulked up a bit.

Got "From Paris With Love" through the 'ole Netflix. I think my enjoyment of any Luc Besson related joint is directly related to how much I pay for it. As I got this as a part of a subscription that I enjoy for the streaming first and the "in mail" stuff second it's all butter and frosting.

I think I've mentioned it before but I've got a thing for competence in the extreme. Probably comes from a healthy diet of Ringo Williams books in my youth, but I love the unstoppable killer of extreme competence. It's why I watch movies with Luc Besson attached at some level, they tend to always have one.

so anyway... this is a fun one, not great cinema, but not insultingly stupid like some action films these days.

Well now I have a conundrum

Every year late August/Early September they release an action film for my Birthday... normally staring Jason Stathan. This year the Jason movie is coming too early (this weekend in fact and I've got my popcorn money together to see Expendables on Tuesday)

Now it's possible that Scott Pilgrim will still be in theaters after Labor day, though not in my usual genre of Mindless Action films it could fit the bill. The only other one coming out between here and there in Machete... but Robert Rodriguez annoys me when he's trying to do an exploitation film. His straight action work I enjoy but whenever he's trying to make a point or shock I don't like his stuff.

Any other options out there that I'm missing?

The Expendables is not as Manly as I'd hoped it would be.

But it may be from a simple mistake I made in Watching Boondock Saints 2 the night before seeing it.

Let's look at the 2 representations of the male ethos.

In Saints 2 the men are drinking, cursing, taking the piss out of each other constantly, in a bit over their heads, and happy to kick ass when needed, to do what's needed.

Expendables the men grimace, flex, beat up bad men that hit women, and shoot a lot while ignoring any wound they happen to take. They manage to fit not 1 but 2 entire damsels in distress in... they don't do anything because it's what's right they do it because it is what is self serving.

My wife is out of town so I'm on a testosterone overload (watching Manly movies, using episodes of 24 as filler, and playing God of War when I've got a longer break time) Maybe if I was in my normal slightly more sensitive world I'd appreciate the 'splosions and flexing and chicks that need the saving, but as it was it was more of a tedium. I was happy when the final over-loud shot was fired. There's some good parts, some good Oh Shit moments, but I think this one is just fine on video.
